Membership

We appreciate your interest in the Retallack Resort & Spa Owners’ Association (ROA).

As a collective of property owners at Retallack Resort & Spa near St Columb Major, we act as a unified voice in discussions with Retallack Management regarding site operations, management, and any updates that may impact owners and guests.

Establishing an official representative body for dialogue about the ongoing management of our resort is a common practice, essential for maintaining our properties, grounds, and recreational amenities.

Our Objectives:

We facilitate dialogue between owners and Away Resorts to enhance the resort experience.

We collaborate with Away Resorts to ensure the resort thrives for all owners, their guests, and Away Resorts.

We hold Away Resorts accountable, when necessary, but also collectively propose ideas and express gratitude for positive changes.

We provide a platform for owners to connect, exchange advice, offer support, and collectively enjoy the resort.

Our Operation:

Our association operates with minimal rules, maintaining independence by excluding Away Resorts’ directors, employees, and agents from membership. We uphold democratic principles, conducting elections for leadership roles. Further details on our committee and constitution can be found at our official website links.

Membership Fee:

In this first year, the membership subscription for Retallack Owners Association is £25, covering the period 1 January to 31 December 2024.  We expect that member subscriptions will be used to fund:

  • Hosting of the Retallack Owners’ website and email systems.
  • Costs associated with any face-to-face meetings with Away leadership.
  • ROA’s contribution to professional fees associated with topics such as scrutiny of the service charge.
  • To the extent agreed by members, professional fees for obtaining specialist legal advice as needed.

The subscription will be reviewed each year in the light of previous year’s spending and discussed at the ROA AGM (see below).

Achievements:

Since ROA’s inception, we have engaged proactively with Away Resorts (and previously Aria Holidays). Below is a list of recent achievements:

When working with Aria:
  • Advocated and stewarded the implementation of a formal RICS process for service charge.
When working with Away:
  • Forged and built relationship with Away senior management.
  • Utilised the RICS findings to successfully advocate termination of the Historic Infrastructure charge worth £3.4M.
  • Used the RICS dispute to campaign for the removal of Belmont’s work on service charge.
  • Worked closely with Away senior management to educate them on the importance of following RICS Service charge guidelines.
  • Convinced both Away and lodge owners to commission an RICS surveyor to oversee future service charge development.
  • Convinced Away to start marketing Retallack as its own entity and brand.
  • Lobbied Away about Marketing Agency and serious flaws resulting in change and improvement in Marketing Agency.
  • Successfully campaigned for changes to the way the site is managed.
  • Improved relations between owners, the Retallack site, and Away head office.
  • Changes to sublet agreement to cover damage and recently renewed focus on sublet agreement to improve the profitability for owners looking at minimum pricing and 2/3-night stays.
  • Lobbied and convinced Away to conduct an audit of Stay Allocations to ensure no favour to Away in either price or allocation (Audit underway).
When working as a formally recognised ROA (November 2023 onwards):
  • Owners Website
  • Side wide TV licence
  • Flo-Gas site wide pricing

Our goal is to maintain and enhance a mutually beneficial relationship with Retallack Resort, ensuring it remains a desirable destination for all.
